{"id":5483,"date":"2024-04-29T18:48:41","date_gmt":"2024-04-29T17:48:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambipar.com\/ie\/?page_id=5483"},"modified":"2024-04-29T19:05:37","modified_gmt":"2024-04-29T18:05:37","slug":"integrity-surveys-bunds-tanks-pipes-etc","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ambipar.com\/ie\/integrity-surveys-bunds-tanks-pipes-etc\/","title":{"rendered":"Integrity Surveys \u2013 Bunds, Tanks, Pipes, etc"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4>Bund Integrity Testing \u2013 as part of your IPPC License<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Bund Testing \u2013 Why should I do it?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.lehaneenvironmental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Bund_integrity_top.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1464\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legal Obligations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Bund Integrity Testing is a general license condition on all IPPC and Waste License Holders.&nbsp; It is normally carried out every 3 years.<\/li><li>Bund Integrity Testing can also be required as a condition on a Local Authority Permit.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Environmental Considerations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A bund is a pollution control device used to mitigate leaks from storage tanks.&nbsp; If the bund is not water tight, then the leak from a storage tank is uncontrolled and will cause pollution to groundwaters and other sensitive receptors leaving the operator liable to prosecution and cleanup costs.<\/li><li>All too often leaks start small and so a tank can be leaking for a lengthy period before it is noticed.&nbsp; This in effect means that the pollutant can migrate a considerable distance resulting in large cleanup costs.&nbsp; An intact maintained bund will mean that if other than rainwater is found in the bund, that there must be a leak in a pipeline or tank within the bund.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Economic Considerations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Bund Maintenance is low cost relative to the financial costs involved in cleanup following pollution incidents.<\/li><li>A well maintained bund can mean that the leaked contents can be recovered thereby avoiding disposal costs and product replacement.<\/li><li>Pollution incidents can lead to prosecutions which can have a negative impact on the Company particularly from a Corporate Social Responsibility Perspective and from Consumer Brand Protection.<\/li><li>Pollution incidents can lead to more tighter license conditions thereby increasing annual compliance costs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bund Testing Procedure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambipar Response will firstly conduct a visual assessment and bund storage volume will be calculated prior to hydrostatically testing the bunds.&nbsp; If necessary the bund will be cleaned by our site services team in order to complete the visual assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bund Integrity is carried out in conformance with the following;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>EPA\u2019s IPPC Guidance Note on the Storage and Transfer of Materials for Scheduled Activities.<\/li><li>British standard BS8007:1987 \u2013 Design of concrete structures for retaining aqueous liquids.<\/li><li>CIRIA report 163 \u2013 Construction of bunds for oil storage tanks.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event that a water retention test is not possible the EPA allows a visual inspection to be carried out in defined cases which are listed below;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Danger of tank floatation<\/li><li>Excessive quantity of water would be used<\/li><li>Normal operations of the site would be hindered<\/li><li>Low level electrical equipment<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However in a lot of the above cases Ambipar Response can carry out a reduced level water retention test which would test the floor of the bund and the wall joints to the floor which are high risk points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On completion of the test, a detailed report is provided to the Client detailing bunds which have passed and failed.&nbsp; For bunds which have failed, Ambipar Response can provide a proposal for the carrying out of remedial works to bring the bund up to the required standard.&nbsp; We can also provide for temporary portable storage tanks with bunding whilst the repairs are being undertaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambipar Response can carry out repairs to the following tanks\/Bunds;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Concrete<\/li><li>Stainless Steel<\/li><li>Mild Steel<\/li><li>Thermoplastic<\/li><li>HDPE<\/li><li>GRP<\/li><li>Other<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Bund Integrity Testing \u2013 as part of your IPPC License Bund Testing \u2013 Why should I do it?
