The government of Pará advocates for an environmental revolution through the distribution of carbon credits with indigenous communities

During a pre-COP 29 event held by CNN, Helder Barbalho once again defended the carbon market as a tool to attract financing, combat environmental crimes, and promote actions to recover the Amazon biome.

Governor Helder Barbalho participated on the evening of Monday (04) in the CNN Talks: Expectations for the Climate Summit, focused on COP 29, which takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22. The event was held in São Paulo. On the occasion, Helder Barbalho once again defended the carbon market as a tool to attract financing to combat environmental crimes and actions to recover the Amazon biome.

The moderator was journalist Willian Waac, and alongside Helder Barbalho, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, the president of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), Rodrigo Agostinho, the governor of Amapá, Clécio Luís, and the Vice President of Sustainability at Ambipar, a global leader in environmental solutions, Rafael Tello, also participated.

“The State of Pará, a month ago, made the largest jurisdictional carbon trade in Brazil’s history, with the monetization of R$ 1 billion, from credits certified by international certifiers. This is a success case of a new resource vision,” pondered Helder Barbalho.

“Pará is on the right track. We have made a tremendous effort to reduce deforestation,” added the president of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), Rodrigo Agostinho.

The head of the Pará state executive branch reaffirmed that Pará will apply the carbon credit resources in a judicious manner aimed at the forest people.

“Never again will an indigenous person from Pará need to go to Funai’s door to ask for resources to get a food basket,” exemplified Helder Barbalho. “The proposal we are making is to share these with indigenous peoples, quilombolas, family farming, and the part that belongs to the state is mandatory by law to be used to foster the continuity of the state’s emission reduction policy,” detailed Helder Barbalho.

According to the governor of Pará, this projects that the state will continue enabling emission reductions as Pará still has a huge challenge ahead.

The allocation of resources from forest monetization was also approved by the governor of Amapá, Clécio Luís.

“I agree with Helder Barbalho! It must always be repeated that it is essential to have remuneration for traditional peoples, indigenous peoples, quilombolas, urban populations, but for the service provided by keeping the forest standing,” argued the head of the Amapá state executive branch, Clécio Luís.

Also on the evening of Monday (04), alongside the CNN Brasil Summit, the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, as well as businessmen and opinion leaders, Helder Barbalho participated in the launch of CNN Brasil Money, a new CNN Brasil channel dedicated to the world of business, financial markets, and the economy. CNN Brasil Money, in a multiplatform strategy, is present on television, YouTube, and streaming platforms.
