The conservation and restoration projects of forests for the production of carbon credits by Ambipar Environment impact over 2.2 million hectares.
Ambipar Environment was one of this year’s highlights in the Environmental Finance’s Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings, the main international award in the voluntary carbon market. The company, owned by Ambipar Group, ranked second (Runner Up) in two out of the three categories it participated in.
These were: Best Forest Project Developer in the World and Best Carbon Project in the World with the REDD+ Manoa Project.
Ambipar Environment’s conservation and restoration projects of forests for the production of carbon credits impact over 2.2 million hectares in Brazilian biomes: Amazon, Atlantic Forest, and Pantanal.
Only in the last year, these projects were responsible for reducing and sequestering over 4.7 million tons of CO2e from the atmosphere, about 43% more than in 2021.
For example, the REDD+ Manoa Project is located in the municipality of Cujubim, in the state of Rondônia, one of the regions with the highest deforestation pressure in the world.
Since 2017, most properties around the farm have been losing their forest areas to livestock and agricultural activities, especially soy cultivation. The area of the REDD+ Manoa Project is an exception and has remained virtually intact over the years.
Due to this particular condition, the REDD+ Manoa Project has become a refuge for over 780 species of fauna in the region. These are animals that have fled deforestation in neighboring properties and have found, in the project area, a safe place to live and multiply.
As a refuge for jaguars, the REDD+ Manoa Project conserves a total area of 74 thousand hectares, and just last year, it reduced more than 270 thousand tons of CO2e.
In addition, Ambipar Environment’s projects prevent the forest from turning into pasture and contribute to improving the quality of life of local communities, generating income, and keeping the forest standing, protecting water sources and biodiversity.
“Being selected among the most important carbon credit projects in the world shows that our initiatives are in line with the global climate transition agenda,” says Plínio Ribeiro, CEO of Biofílica Ambipar.
The Environmental Finance’s Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings is an annual market survey in which market participants vote on the top initiatives with best practices and innovation. This year, the number of participants was a record.
In total, there were 4,300 votes in 22 categories, with two new categories included this year: Best Innovation in Credit (non-carbon) and Best Project Developer, Biodiversity.
Last year, Ambipar Environment was the winner in the individual offset project category with the “ARR Corredores de Vida Project” in partnership with IPÊ, in the Pontal do Paranapanema region.
In previous years, Ambipar Environment received awards in the category “Best Project Developer, Forest and Land Use,” in 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2020. In 2022, it ranked second in this category.
