Richard Sims (Ambipar Response Ltd) and Mike Gass (Confident Backstop) jointly collaborated in the delivery of an accredited ICS 300 course and an IMO 2 course run concurrently at a venue in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens on the island of Bermuda.
28 delegates representing business and several of the United Kingdom’s Overseas Territories (UKOTs) including Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands and Montserrat attended the training, enabling the instructors to leverage knowledge and experience from the wider Caribbean region which made for a very interactive training event.
Project Works:
The first two days were taken up with the ICS 300 course which included a number of theory based sessions with plenty of classroom activities involving the clarification of ICS 100/200 online training through a team question and answer session that promoted an air of healthy competition amongst the group. This was followed later the first day with a communication exercise that tested the power of listening and observation through the art of drawing.
The second day consisted of more group activity going around the ICS “Planning P” with actions and tasks linked to Incident Action Plan (IAP) preparation and development with opportunities to experience the various formal meetings with added realism.
The IMO 2 course was delivered over four days culminating in a one-day exercise on day five focusing on the incident management process and technical aspects of oil spill response based on a local scenario.
Results:
The IMO 2 course again was interactive with 18 theoretical modules including videos, quantification calculations, press statements and strategy choice tasks integrated into the course to enhance the learning experience. On the afternoon of day three, the team viewed some of the oil spill response equipment down at the dock, conducted an onsite shoreline risk assessment and were able to get hands experience with the deployment of the boom and constructing a couple of oil storage systems.
Testimonials:
“There is a need to deliver the same training in the other UKOTs”.
“I liked the balance of interactive session versus the more traditional PowerPoint presentation”.
“Both instructors were knowledgeable”.
