REDD+ carbon credit project carried out by Biofílica Ambipar in the Amazon.
The Ambipar Group, a Brazilian multinational leader in environmental management, is an ambassador of the Amazon Impact Movement, a commitment launched by the United Nations Global Compact on September 14th in New York. The movement aims to define, for the business sector, the implementation of a series of initiatives and projects that ensure the fight against deforestation and promote actions to keep the forest standing until 2030.
In response to the demands of the private sector and civil society, the UN Global Compact in Brazil initiated dialogues about its role in preserving the Amazon with different organizations and personalities in the fight against deforestation and the preservation of the biome.
According to Rafael Tello, sustainability director of the Ambipar Group, despite the great potential to work in coordination with the more than 1,900 organizations that are part of the Global Compact in Brazil, there is still a high level of complexity to advance in the fight against deforestation and sustainable development of the region. “A sector or organization, on its own, does not have enough strength to address this movement. Therefore, it is necessary to define coordination that involves the private sector, the public sector, and civil society and that has clear public ambitions and commitments that can be monitored. This is exactly what the UN Global Compact aims to achieve by implementing the Amazon Impact,” he says.
The movement is guided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) based on three pillars of action. The first is Environmental Accountability, which aims to engage actors in the public sector in a joint action to represent the private sector in the application of environmental legislation. The second pillar, called Confronting Deforestation, aims to ensure that the operations and products of companies do not contribute to deforestation in the Amazon. Finally, the third pillar, Standing Forest, seeks to develop projects that support the maintenance and preservation of forests until 2030.
According to Rafael Tello, the participation of the Ambipar Group as an ambassador of the Amazon Impact is of utmost importance for the company, but also to generate positive impacts on society. “The movement will contribute to the preservation of the world’s largest forest, as well as promote more responsible production processes by companies. The actions help in the fight against climate change to ensure a more sustainable future for society. That is why it is so important for the business sector to mobilize with the Ambipar Group and the Global Compact, in order to fulfill environmental agendas by 2030,” he says.
The signing of commitments for the Amazon Impact Movement took place on September 14th during the SDGs in Brazil event, organized by the Global Compact, held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
