As part of its commitment to promoting sustainable practices and strengthening environmental initiatives, Assaí has partnered with Ambipar, a global leader in environmental solutions, to install recycling points in two stores in Maranhão.

The equipment, called the Retorna Machine, accepts items such as PET bottles, aluminum, steel, Tetra Pak packaging, glass, and plastics like polypropylene and polyethylene. By depositing these materials, customers not only contribute to post-consumer packaging recycling and reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also earn points, called Tricoins, which can be exchanged for user benefits.

To use the Retorna Machine, customers must create an account via the app, Triciclo website (https://triciclo.eco.br), or directly on the machine. After registering, simply deposit the empty packaging into the machine. Accumulated points can be converted into credits for electricity bill discounts, public transportation balance, mobile recharge, credits in delivery apps, among others.

“Celebrating half a century of operations this year, Assaí reinforces its sustainability strategies toward its greatest commitment: driving prosperity for everyone through responsible and transparent operations with minimal environmental impact, both internally and across its value chain. This partnership with Ambipar is part of our initiatives to foster more conscious and environmentally responsible actions with our diverse audiences,” says Fabio Lavezo, Sustainability and Social Investment Manager at Assaí.

“The partnership with Assaí marks an important step toward fostering environmental education in Brazil. The Retorna Machines not only streamline recycling logistics but also play a role in raising awareness among Maranhão’s population about the importance of proper waste disposal, combining innovation with a commitment to environmental preservation. With this initiative, Ambipar demonstrates that it is possible to transform environmental challenges into practical and impactful solutions, enabling the participation of governments, private sectors, and the public,” comments Felipe Nassar Cury, Head of Post-Consumer Division at Ambipar.

Reducing waste generation

Assaí continuously strives to reduce the volume of waste generated within its operations, ensuring the environmentally proper disposal of materials and minimizing its environmental impact.

In the state of Maranhão alone, 75% of Assaí stores already have voluntary drop-off points (PEV) for packaging, and all units are equipped with collectors for recycling light bulbs and batteries.
