COFIP ABC celebrates 50 years of the Greater ABC Petrochemical Complex

An event held on November 22 highlights the Polo’s strategic importance for the region and for the sustainable development of the national chemical industry.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Greater ABC Petrochemical Complex, the oldest in the country, the Industrial Promotion Committee of the Greater ABC Complex (COFIP ABC), which brings together 17 member companies, promoted this Tuesday, November 22, a extensive debate with authorities in the region, representatives of the sector and workers.

The Pole’s socioeconomic impact on the regional, state and national economy was the theme of the first part of the event, which had as participants the president of the Greater ABC Economic Development Agency, Aroaldo Oliveira da Silva; the president of the ABC Chemists’ Union, Raimundo Suzart; the Secretary of Economic Development of Mauá, Vera Escudeiro, the mayor of Santo André, Paulo Serra; state deputy Luiz Fernando Teixeira, representative of the Parliamentary Chemistry Front; and the president of COFIP ABC, Max Araújo, and the secretary of Economic Development of the State of São Paulo, Bruno Caetano.

“It is very rewarding to celebrate these 50 years, especially after the Polo’s institutionalization, an extremely important achievement for the development not only of the companies that make up the Polo, but for the ABC region, both from an economic and social point of view”, he said. the president of COFIP ACB during the opening ceremony of the event held in the auditorium of Estação Jardim, in Santo André.

The mayor of Santo André, Paulo Serra, highlighted that the Polo’s institutionalization consolidates a safe environment for investments, bringing benefits to the three municipalities. “No one doubts the economic importance that the Complex represents for the region and the signing of the institutionalization decree materialized this importance”, he highlighted. Mauá’s Secretary of Economic Development, Vera Escudeiro, recalled that, in addition to the Pole’s delimitation area, a governance committee was set up to manage this process. “There is no social development without economic development and the Hub is relevant not only for Mauá, but for all of Brazil”, she said.

The president of the Greater ABC Economic Development Agency, Aroaldo Oliveira da Silva, highlighted the potential for job creation by companies in the Hub. “In addition to the 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, there is an extensive production chain that revolves around the Pole, generating between 50,000 and 60,000 jobs, not only in the ABC region, but throughout the country”.

The second round of debate, whose theme was Innovation, sustainability and technology: the next 50 years, was attended by Max Araújo; the Secretary of Development and Employment Generation of the Municipality of Santo André (representing the Municipal Consortium), Evandro Banzato, and the Interim Executive President of ABIQUIM (Brazilian Association of the Chemical Industry), André Passos.

The secretary of Santo André Evandro Banzato said that innovation is essential for the perpetuity of industries in the coming years. “Technological innovation solutions are being discussed with the universities of São Paulo so that industries can improve their production processes”.

André Passos, from Abiquim, highlighted that among the main challenges that need to be overcome in the next 50 years are the organization of political and sectorial leaders together with the participation of society so that the necessary investments in the chemical industry are carried out. “It is still necessary to stimulate fiscal incentives so that a new industrial public policy is generated through renewable alternatives”, he said.

One of the most important petrochemical complexes operating in Brazil, the Greater ABC Complex is responsible for 12% of the national chemical industry’s GDP, equivalent to nearly R$50 billion in revenue per year. The Polo companies generate around 10 thousand formal jobs and contribute with approximately 60% of the total collection of Mauá and 25% of the annual budget of Santo André.

Institutionalization of the Hub and Social Dialogue Forum
This year, in August, COFIP ABC and the municipalities of Mauá and Santo André signed the municipal decrees delimiting the area of ​​the Greater ABC Hub as a complex of industries and companies in the chemical, petrochemical and LPG bottling (liquefied gas) sectors. of petroleum) and the creation of the Hub’s Governance Management Committee. The decrees contemplate the development of actions to support the operation of the Pole, in order to increase its competitiveness and guarantee conditions of safety and quality of life for the surrounding community.

Another important initiative put into practice in July this year by COFIP ABC and associated companies was the creation of a direct relationship channel with communities in the municipalities of Mauá, Santo André and Parque São Rafael (SP), as part of the activities of the Plan of Communication and Participation (PCP) which includes several actions to intensify and strengthen communication with the surrounding residents. Held quarterly in each municipality, the Social Dialogue Forum meetings are an opportunity for residents to present their opinions, suggest improvements and highlight the demands considered important. It is a democratic space for active listening and broad dialogue between communities, representatives of the regulatory body, public authorities and companies associated with COFIP ABC.
