Incident Response Service to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB)

Project Scope:

Ambipar Response have successfully provided Incident Response Service to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) since 2009, providing a 24/7 response service for numerous incidents across the country involving UK registered vessels or vessels in UK water.

MAIB is responsible for the investigation of marine accidents involving UK registered vessels anywhere in the world and any vessels within UK territorial water; and that in carrying out its duties, MAIB’s investigators may have a requirement to gain entry to marine vessels that have been subject to an accident or incident, for the purposes of gathering information and evidence surrounding or pertaining to the nature or cause of the event.

Project Works:

The main purpose of the contract is to:

  • Facilitate confined space safe entry for trained and competent MAIB staff on board vessels in UK ports;
  • Provide gas monitoring and issuing of gas free certification;

Facilitate the rescue of MAIB staff or MAIB controlled contractors from confined spaces in emergency situations including the provision of emergency first aid; and

  • Undertake maintenance of equipment and training of staff based at strategic locations to enable the timely and effective response to incidents within 6 hours of notification to anywhere within the UK mainland and elsewhere on a best endeavours’ basis.

Our specialist incident response and decontamination teams trained in confined space safe entry and rescue techniques have supported MAIB and the emergency services during a number of accident investigations including:

  • Goole Star – Southampton (2015)

We also undertake confined space entry work as part of incident response and planned maintenance activities for other organisations including Highways England and various port and harbour authorities:
