Ambipar Response’s Salvage Support Team were mobilised to undertake the recovery and disposal of a grounded fishing vessel (MFV CSK – M99) from the Pembrokeshire Coastline. Throughout the operation due care was taken to minimise the impact on environmental and socio-economic receptors, especially the Cushion Starfish habitat within the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) adjacent to the salvage site.

Once the vessel was removed from the shoreline the teams were responsible for the decontamination and waste disposal of the vessel. This was to be undertaken in a manner which reduces the impact on the environment and abided by the Ambipar Response’s and the clients stringent waste management and sustainability policies.

Project Works:

The project works entailed:

Liaising with all stakeholders including the port authority, environmental regulators, local authorities, vessel insurance company and the vessel owner.

Developing a cost-effective vessel recovery plan which minimised the impact to environment and abided by all regulatory stipulations.

Ensuring contingency measures were in place in the event there was an unforeseen release of pollution into the marine environment.

Undertaking a structural survey of the vessel to determine its condition.

Undertaking post vessel recovery shoreline environmental remediation works.

Ensuring all waste was segregated and treated in line with the principles of the waste hierarchy and regulatory guidance.

Results:

Built and operated a waste disposal operation to comply with environmental regulations to cope with the salvaged items being brought ashore.

Salvaged the vessel in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner.

Undertook environmental monitoring throughout the works.

Successfully remediated the shoreline after the salvage operation.

No lost time safety incidents throughout the duration of the project.
