Ambipar Response were mobilised by Anglesey County Council following recommendation from the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to assist with shoreline recovery operations following damage caused by Storm Emma.

Storm Emma was a significant Storm resulting in catastrophic impacts on the Isle of Anglesey, in-particular Holyhead Marina where all 80 vessels that were berthed at the marina either capsized or were seriously damaged, resulting in the pontoons being damaged and inadvertently releasing large volumes of polystyrene which impacted approximately 30km of shoreline.

Project Works:

Provision and supervision of Shoreline Clean-up Assessment (SCAT) teams to identify debris and assess most heavily impacted areas of shoreline and formalise response strategies into reports;

Following shoreline assessment, prepare clean-up plans that identify resources and timeframes required to complete recovery operations;

Prioritise areas of shoreline which are most environmentally and socio-economically sensitive;

Conduct and supervise shoreline clean-up operations including container and cargo recovery from the shoreline; and

Management of all hazardous and non-hazardous waste issues including recovery, repackaging, transport and final disposal.

Results:

Response teams on-site within 4 hours of mobilisation;

Ambipar Incident Managers provided technical advice to County Council;

Simultaneous operations completed by scaling up response teams after initial response phase;

Managing communications with multiple stakeholders including local authority, vessel owners, cargo owners, environmental regulators, MCA, Port owners and salvors;
