Instead of traffic, a simulation took over the Cubatão section of the Imigrantes Highway on Thursday (10/19). The concessionaire, Ecovias, conducted a hazardous materials accident simulation with the aim of improving emergency response procedures on the highways.

According to the concessionaire, the initiative took place at Km 62, near the access ramp of the interconnection with Rodovia Anchieta, heading towards São Paulo. The action mobilized teams from Ecovias, the São Paulo State Transportation Agency (Artesp), State Highway Police (1º BPRV), 2nd Subgroup of the 6th Cubatão Fire Department Group, Cetesb, Civil Defense, SAMU, APELL (Alert and Preparation of Communities for Local Level Emergencies), and partner companies (SMR Resgate, Kteli Sinalização Viária, Viação Piracicabana, VLI Logística, Cesari Logística, Ambipar Environmental Management, Yara Fertilizantes, Usiminas, and CIESP Cubatão).

Thirteen victims and a boy were involved in the scene, where the boy was seen flying a kite with a dangerous string near the highway, accidentally injuring a motorcyclist who fell on the road. Subsequently, to avoid hitting the motorcycle rider, the driver of a passenger vehicle suddenly brakes and ends up being rear-ended by a van coming from behind that doesn’t have time to swerve.

Immediately after the incident, the driver of a truck traveling in the area sees the accident and, in an attempt to avoid it, swerves the heavy vehicle to the side, causing it to overturn and start leaking nitric acid at the scene.

“The training and preparation of our teams are ongoing. Actions like these help us refine established procedures, allowing us to provide quality assistance to our users,” explains Ecovias’ traffic coordinator, Márcio Vono.

The scene emphasized the importance of caution and prevention on the roads. According to Ecovias, the entire stretch was properly signaled to ensure the safety of participants and users.
