Through Braskem’s investment, Ambipar Triciclo’s Retorna Machines will receive polyethylene and polypropylene waste with the aim of increasing the recycling of these types of plastics.
Ambipar Triciclo and Braskem, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, have formed a partnership to expand the conscious and proper disposal of plastic products. Through this initiative, all of Ambipar Triciclo’s Retorna Machines, a technology developed by the company, will start receiving polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) packaging. These plastic resins have high global production and are present in many everyday consumer plastic packages such as yogurt bottles, sugar packages, beans and rice, margarine and ice cream containers, shampoo, conditioner, fabric softener, among others.
The action contributes to Braskem’s sustainable development goals, including the elimination of plastic waste. The company aims to produce 300,000 tons of thermoplastic resins and chemicals with recycled content by 2025 and one million tons by 2030, while also working to prevent 1.5 million tons of plastic waste from being incinerated, landfilled, or deposited in the environment.
“To achieve a Circular Economy, it is essential to engage consumers in proper disposal and the importance of recycling. In this regard, we invest in partnerships like this with Ambipar Triciclo, which raise awareness about the role everyone plays in building a more sustainable future. Additionally, the project will contribute to achieving our goals of eliminating plastic waste, generating a positive impact throughout the production chain,” says Fabiana Quiroga, Director of Circular Economy at Braskem in South America.
The PE and PP plastic waste collected in the Retorna Machines will be used as raw material in Braskem’s newly inaugurated mechanical recycling plant in Indaiatuba, Brazil, which had an investment of R$ 67 million and is the result of a partnership with Valoren, a technology developer and waste management company specializing in transforming waste into recycled products. The expectation is that annually, 250 million post-consumer packaging made of polyethylene and polypropylene will be transformed into 14,000 tons of high-quality recycled resin, which will then be reused as raw material in the manufacturing industry.
“Our proposal is to encourage the population to properly dispose of waste by providing more and more Retorna Machines, expanding and strengthening partnerships like this one. With Braskem, we will leverage our sustainability goals and attract more people interested in contributing to the preservation of our planet and future generations,” comments Felipe Nassar Cury, CEO of Ambipar Triciclo.
Ambipar Triciclo has been operating in the market since 2016 with the mission of creating and operating solutions for sustainable development through the monetization of the reverse logistics system, customer loyalty, and an advanced marketing system. It had its corporate control acquired by the Ambipar Group in 2021 and operates projects such as Retorna Machine, Recicla Pharma, and Deixaki, all linked to the Triciclo Loyalty Program. In this program, the collected packages are worth “tricoins,” which can be exchanged for benefits such as electricity bonuses, transportation card top-ups, bookstore discounts, telephone credit, digital account credit, and more. All collected material is processed by Ambipar Triciclo itself for delivery to cooperatives and recycling companies. In six years of operation, they have collected over 25 million post-consumer packages, generating income, raw materials, and employment.
