The AR Corredores de Vida Project / IPÊ – Institute for Ecological Research (Pontal do Paranapanema)
Developed by IPÊ – Institute for Ecological Research and Biofílica Ambipar Environment will receive new investment from the marketplace, enabling the planting of an additional 50 hectares of native Atlantic Forest trees in the Pontal do Paranapenema region.
With the aim of offsetting its carbon footprint today and generating credits for future trading, Mercado Livre will allocate an additional R$24 million in 2022 to Regenera América, a program that supports forest restoration and conservation initiatives. Together with the R$39 million invested last year, a total of R$87 million will be applied to regeneration in the main biomes of Latin America, a region that houses 40% of the planet’s biodiversity.
One of the projects supported by the program is the AR Corredores de Vida Project, which has been underway for over 20 years by IPÊ in the Pontal do Paranapanema region and, since last year, has benefited from Biofílica Ambipar Environment‘s expertise in forest carbon project management. The initiative combines IPÊ’s experience in forest restoration with Biofílica’s know-how in the development and management of carbon projects to measure and trade the CO2eq absorbed by the restored areas during the project period.
In 2021, the investment focused on restoring 250 hectares of Atlantic Forest. Now, with the new application, an additional 50 hectares of this biome in the state of São Paulo will be restored through the planting of 100 thousand native trees. The project’s objective is to restore 30,000 hectares in 10 years, which will remove over 11 million tCO2e from the atmosphere and generate income for more than 900 local families.
In addition to the climate and biodiversity benefits resulting from the diversity of native species that sequester carbon and connect forests and landscapes, the project also promotes various community benefits, mainly through environmental education activities, courses promotion, and incentives for the establishment of forest seedling nurseries.
Effective in combating climate change, tree planting for the restoration of natural vegetation generates carbon removal credits through photosynthesis, as the trees capture and store the carbon emitted into the atmosphere in their biomass as they grow. Additionally, restoring these areas generates other environmental benefits, such as soil and water resource protection and recovery, food provision, increased pollination, and attraction of local fauna, which begins to use and inhabit these rehabilitated environments.
Founded in 2008, Biofílica Ambipar Environment‘s mission is to create a solid and reliable market for environmental services in Brazil through the generation and trading of carbon credits from Nature-Based Solutions (NBS).
They develop projects that promote the reduction and sequestration of carbon emissions through forest conservation and reforestation, valuing standing forests and their environmental services while protecting biodiversity. Additionally, they invest in scientific research and the socioeconomic development of communities living in these areas. They are a national reference in legal reserve compensation, offering solutions in all modalities, states, and biomes.
The IPÊ – Institute for Ecological Research is a Brazilian non-profit organization dedicated to conserving the country’s biodiversity through science, education, and sustainable businesses. Founded in 1992, it is headquartered in Nazaré Paulista (São Paulo), where its education center, ESCAS – Higher School of Environmental Conservation and Sustainability, is also located.
Operating in the Atlantic Forest, Amazon, Pantanal, and Cerrado biomes, the Institute carries out approximately 30 projects each year, applying the IPÊ Conservation Model, which involves scientific species research, environmental education, community involvement and mobilization, habitat and landscape conservation, and support for the development of public policies. In addition to local projects, the Institute also implements work in various regions, focusing on Protected Areas, Urban Areas, and Research & Development (Natural Capital and Biodiversity).
IPÊ is responsible for planting 6 million trees in the Atlantic Forest, directly contributing to the conservation of six wildlife species, providing environmental education and training to an average of 12 thousand people annually. The projects benefit 200 families with sustainable actions and knowledge about environmental conservation.
To develop socio-environmental projects, the organization collaborates with partners from all sectors and acts as an intermediary in initiatives that promote engagement and mutual strengthening among socio-environmental organizations, the private sector, and government institutions. www.ipe.org.br
