Partnership encourages consumers to correctly dispose of waste in exchange for tricoins, which guarantee benefits such as a discount on the energy bill, cell phone recharge and discount on the public transport card
With the aim of promoting recycling and stimulating the circular economy, Colgate-Palmolive sponsored the installation of 18 Ambipar Triciclo machines in regions of Greater São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. In all, there were 16 ‘Retorna Machines’ and 2 ‘Deixaki’ machines, which help expand the collection of packaging and recyclable materials. The complete installation of the equipment has just been completed in SAM’s Club, Americanas and Supermarket stores in the three capitals. In addition, Colgate-Palmolive also closed an agreement for the installation of a “Deixaki” at its manufacturing unit in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) and a “Retorna Machine” at the company’s office in São Paulo.
How the Return Machine and Leaveki work
The ‘Retorna Machine’ collect post-consumer plastic, glass, aluminum, steel and long-life packaging. Using the bar code, they read the deposited material and then calculate the score for each one of them. These points are called ‘tricoins’ and become available to anyone who creates an account on the Triciclo website or app. Recycling packaging generates credits for discounts on energy bills, cell phone recharges, public transport, products at Livraria Saraiva or cash redemptions through an account opened at Pagbank and Mercado Pago. The ‘Retorna Machine’ can be found inside establishments.
The ‘Deixaki’ are larger pieces of equipment that are located in the parking lots of markets or hypermarkets and can receive different types of material, such as cardboard and electronics. To use and participate, the user simply needs to access the Triciclo app and website, log into their account and select the “Deixaki” option to generate a token number. With this number, all you have to do is identify the bags containing the material and deposit them at Leaveki. Within seven business days after the recyclables are deposited, the ‘tricoins’ are granted to users.
“This initiative brings visibility to the issue of waste management, which is an important part of Colgate-Palmolive’s sustainability strategy”, says Riccardo Ricci, president of Colgate-Palmolive Brazil. “Once these materials are inserted into a reverse logistics process, they can be returned for consumption as new”, he explains.
The partnership with Ambipar Triciclo is yet another Colgate-Palmolive initiative to encourage the circular economy. In the first half of this year, the company announced that it had obtained the TRUE Zero Waste seal, granted by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). The certification certifies zero waste for the company’s two plants and a distribution center in Brazil.
Felipe Lagrotta Nassar Cury, CEO of Ambipar Triciclo, believes that the initiative between the companies creates a strong power of engagement and a sense of urgency regarding issues related to the preservation of the environment. “As a company, we have a fundamental role before society when we talk about environmental preservation. We need to preserve today and, in this context, environmental education is essential, especially for the generations that will determine the future of our survival”, comments
