Partnership and inauguration of a composting pilot project mark the launch of the “Recycle Together” Program at an event held in Nova Odessa.
On Wednesday (05/17), World Recycling Day, Consimares (Intermunicipal Consortium for Solid Waste Management of the Metropolitan Region of Campinas) presented the “Recycle Together Consimares – United in Intelligent Waste Disposal” Program. Two important actions marked the launch: the signing of a technical cooperation agreement to seal the partnership with the “Ambipar Viraser Solutions Project,” known for its expertise in strengthening and self-management of recycling cooperatives and professional associations.
The inauguration of the “Composta Nova Odessa” pilot project’s composter also took place. The event, held at the Nova Odessa City Hall auditorium, was attended by mayors, councilors, and environmental technicians from the region, including Mayor Cláudio Schooder (known as Leitinho) and his vice mayor Alessandro Miranda (known as Mineirinho).
“Today, we begin a new partnership between the Consortium, Nova Odessa City Hall, and Ambipar, one of the largest companies in our city, in this project for recycling and composting, which is already underway. Partnerships are always welcome by the population and also by our administration. You can always count on Nova Odessa,” said Leitinho to those present in the City Hall auditorium.
The partnership with the Ambipar Viraser project will assist municipalities in the region in promoting and managing recycling cooperatives. To formalize the partnership, Mauricio Baroni, President of Consimares, was accompanied by Ambipar CEO Cristina Andriotti, Ambipar Viraser Director of Institutional Relations Maíra Pereira, and Geraldo Virgínio, responsible for Government Relations at Ambipar Viraser.
“Viraser is present throughout Brazil. Through this partnership, we will bring together all the actors to reach a sustainable solution and accelerate the process of transforming cooperatives into a social franchise model,” commented the CEO of Ambipar.
Baroni emphasized that the agreement with Ambipar Viraser aligns with the actions of the Recycle Together Consimares Program, which consists of four priority projects, including the formation of a network of recycling cooperatives.
“To expand the selective collection of recyclables with the support of waste pickers, generating work and income for these workers, it is necessary to organize and treat them with the dignity they deserve. And this involves the efficient management of cooperatives and associations,” observed the President of Consimares.
During the event, Consimares also presented the functioning of the composting pilot project, “Composta Nova Odessa,” which repurposes organic waste (fruits, vegetables, garden trimmings) and transforms them into fertilizer. The initiative is carried out in partnership with the Nova Odessa City Hall.
After the presentation, the guests visited the composting site located on the grounds of the Nova Odessa Environmental Treatment Plant. The site received 12,000 kilograms of organic waste, which are currently decomposing to become fertilizer (60% trimmings and 40% fruits and vegetables donated by Supermarket Pague Menos). Consimares intends to expand the project to other interested cities.
During the meeting, Consimares Superintendent Mimo Ravagnani shared his experience in Portugal, visiting a Waste Treatment Center with technology to transform waste into electricity. The system is similar to the Consimares Treatment Center project, which has already been approved by the São Paulo State Environmental Company (Cetesb) and is being discussed with the municipalities.
The Recycle Together Consimares Program consists of four priority projects of the Consortium for human, intelligent, and sustainable solid waste management: the implementation of a network of recycling cooperatives, the Composta Nova Odessa pilot project, a Mobile Plant for the Reuse of Construction and Demolition Waste (RCC), and the Waste Treatment Center.
The initiative involves the seven municipalities of the Consortium (Capivari, Elias Fausto, Hortolândia, Monte Mor, Nova Odessa, Santa Bárbara d’Oeste, and Sumaré), with a population of about 1 million inhabitants, which produces around 700 tons of waste per day, with the majority being sent to landfills.
“The Recycle Together Consimares will bring together the efforts of the municipalities and society as a whole for the proper disposal of waste. It is a challenge that requires the joint participation of the Consortium, City Halls, Legislative and Judicial Powers, as well as the community, organizations, and the private sector. Through awareness campaigns, we will teach the community how to separate solid and organic waste for recycling and the importance of this action for the environment,” highlighted the Consortium’s President.
