The initiative developed by IPÊ – Institute of Ecological Research and Biofílica Ambipar Environment – will receive new investment, enabling the planting of 50 more hectares of native trees from the Atlantic Forest in the Pontal do Paranapenema region. The goal is to offset its carbon footprint and generate credits for future trading. To achieve this, Mercado Livre will allocate an additional R$ 24 million to the Regenera America program in 2022, supporting initiatives for forest restoration and conservation. Combined with the R$ 39 million invested last year, a total of R$ 87 million will be applied to regeneration in the main biomes of Latin America, a region that houses 40% of the planet’s biodiversity. Among the projects supported by the program is the AR Corredores de Vida Project, a work of over 20 years by IPÊ in the Pontal do Paranapanema region. Since last year, it has benefited from Biofílica Ambipar Environment’s expertise in forest carbon project management. The initiative combines IPÊ’s experience in forest restoration with Biofílica’s know-how in the development and management of carbon projects to measure and trade the CO2eq absorbed by the restored areas over the project’s duration.
In 2021, the investment was directed towards the restoration of 250 hectares of Atlantic Forest. Now, with the new application, an additional 50 hectares of this biome in the state of São Paulo will be restored through the planting of 100,000 native trees. The Project’s objective is to recover 30,000 hectares in 10 years, which will allow the removal of over 11 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere and generate income for over 900 local families. In addition to the climate and biodiversity benefits arising from the diversity of native species that sequester carbon, connecting forests and landscapes, the project also promotes various benefits to the community, particularly through environmental education activities, the promotion of courses, and incentives for the establishment of forest seedling nurseries.
