To contribute to a low-carbon economy, Suape Complex promoted the “Suape on the Decarbonization Route” event on Tuesday and Wednesday (September 12 and 13) at the headquarters building. During the event, climate action plans were released, documents developed in partnership with the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), containing proposals for climate change mitigation and adaptation for the strategic territory, composed of the municipalities Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Ipojuca, Moreno, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Escada, Sirinhaém, Ribeirão, and Rio Formoso, as well as for the industrial zone. The agenda aligns with the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Agenda, one of the pillars of the complex’s administration.
The documents will be made available to municipal managers so that they can adopt cooperation strategies to reduce global warming. The idea is also to encourage companies within the industrial zone of the state to develop their own plans with initiatives that contribute to the future economy, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and adaptation of each project to address the climate emergency, considering the results obtained from emissions inventories and risk and vulnerability analysis in the area.
“The active participation and commitment of all companies and suppliers within the complex are fundamental for the success of the project. The success of decarbonization and the development of a solid and proactive climate agenda depend on collective commitment to addressing climate change challenges,” said Carlos Cavalcanti, Sustainability Director of Suape.
Rodrigo Perpétuo, Executive Secretary of ICLEI, also emphasized the importance of collaboration from the production chain. “The document shows the path that the complex should follow to develop strategies to achieve climate compliance. It is a call to companies that are part of the state’s industrial zone to commit to sustainability,” he said.
Among the leaders present at the event were Karla Godoy, Executive Secretary of Sustainability in Pernambuco; Emerson Pires, Secretary of Environment in Sirinhaém; Edson Queiroz, Secretary of Human Development and Environment in Jaboatão dos Guararapes; Gabriela Jeronimo, Secretary of Planning and Environment in Cabo de Santo Agostinho; Keila Ferreira, representative of Way Carbon/Iclei; Vinícius Alves, representative of Ambipar company; Rômulo Menezes, representative of the Northeast Plant Association; Oziel Alves, Director of Innovation and Industrial Technology at Senai; Laura Albuquerque, head of Future Carbon Solutions; Paulo Cruz, People and Organization Manager at Tecon Suape; and Ariel Leite, Coordinator of Technological Products at Blockchain na Escola.
CARBON STOCK
During the event, Rômulo Menezes, a professor from the Northeast Plant Association, presented the results of the carbon stock inventory in the Suape Ecological Preservation Zone (ZPEC). In the area studied by the professor, totaling 6,500 hectares, the presence of 1,827,211 tons of stored carbon was found, with 35.2% of this stock in forested areas and 32.2% in mangrove areas. “This reinforces the importance of mangroves in carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change,” highlights Carlos Cavalcanti, Sustainability Director of Suape.
“This is an initiative that will serve as a reference for the entire Northeast, elevating the region’s decarbonization agenda. This event promoted by Suape not only sets goals and commitments but also offers a space for the exchange of best practices, learning, and collaboration among stakeholders,” said the manager.
