The UN Global Compact in Brazil will have an exclusive agenda, parallel to the official COP28 (28th United Nations Climate Change Conference) agenda, which takes place until December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The institution aims to highlight initiatives promoted in Brazil, relevant to mitigating climate crisis issues and advancing the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN’s 2030 Agenda. Additionally, the Global Compact will bring together over 300 participants on December 8, including high-level national and international leaders from the public and private sectors, representatives of non-governmental organizations, academics, opinion leaders, and international leaders of the Global Compact, to discuss decarbonization, climate transition, climate justice, ‘green finance,’ and human rights.
“We are not sparing efforts to support companies on the decarbonization journey. A possible economy and a healthy planet only exist if all parties act to find solutions in the same direction, which is to limit the warming of the planet. Leveraging this agenda with the necessary intensity and speed is our main goal, providing support so that no one is left behind,” says Carlo Pereira, CEO of the UN Global Compact, who participates in panels at the Blue Zone and leads the institute’s agenda.
After competing with organizations worldwide, the UN Global Compact in Brazil will have, for the first time, its own panel within the official program of the Blue Zone, the area where the main discussions related to COP climate negotiations take place. The discussion will focus on how the combination of collective actions, technology, and data connectivity can be used to implement innovative and science-based climate actions and boost momentum to achieve Net Zero. Climate Ventures, iCS, Global Compact, and Future Carbon will launch the Onda Verde Platform as the largest Low Carbon Solutions Bank in Latin America. The presentation will take place on December 10, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 AM Dubai time (6:30 PM to 1:00 AM in Brazil).
The institute will also participate in three more panels at the Blue Zone: On December 6, with the UN Global Compact in Norway, participating in the panel: Responsible Forest Management: The Role of the Private Sector in Saving Our Forests and the Path to Bethlehem Implementing the Flag. On the same day, alongside Apex Brasil (Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investments) and CEBRI (Brazilian Center for International Relations), the discussion will be ‘G20 and the sustainability agenda: challenges of developing economies,’ and on December 9, also with Apex: ‘How does agribusiness and mining deal with the future?’
The first event on the agenda of the Brazilian network of the UN Global Compact will start on December 2 at 11 AM local time at the Mozambique Pavilion, with the panel ‘Sharing Scientific Knowledge and Transparency of Climate Action in Portuguese: Results of Cooperation between Portuguese-speaking Countries,’ which will launch the Portuguese translation of the IPCC 2023 Synthesis Report, translated by the partnership between the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI) and the UN Global Compact in Brazil. On the same day, at the Brazilian Pavilion, the panel ‘How to scale up environmental action? Multilevel governance in the Brazilian climate agenda,’ organized by CDP, CEBDS, Ethos, FGVces, Sustainable Amazon Foundation, UN Global Compact in Brazil, and WRI (3 PM).
Heading to December 3, the Global Compact will hold panels: From Planning to Action: Implementing an Increasingly Circular and Low Carbon Solution, with the participation of Ambipar, CEBDS, and Bayer at the Future Mobility Hub in the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre – 10th Floor – Dubai, at 10 AM local time, and at 5 PM, the conversation: Promotion of Sustainable Development: Values for a Resilient Future, in the same location.
On December 4, at 5:30 PM (Dubai time), the + Water Movement will have a panel discussion on collective actions for 2024, focusing on building the Brazilian Coalition for Water Resilience. And at 7 PM, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, BNDES, and Eletrobras will hold an event in partnership with the Global Compact to talk about Funds for Accelerating Energy Transition in Brazil. The + Water Movement, the largest corporate engagement for the Sustainable Development Goal 6 – Water and Sanitation agenda, will be the central theme of the panel: + Water Movement as an instrument of collective action for the private sector. This discussion will address collective actions for 2024, focusing on building the Brazilian Coalition for Water Resilience. After this conversation, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the National Bank for Social Development, and Eletrobras will hold an event: Funds for Accelerating Energy Transition in Brazil with the signing of a cooperation agreement between Eletrobras and BNDES, through a matchfunding for environmental restoration at the Future Mobility Hub in the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre.
On December 6, at 1 PM (Dubai time), the panels of the workshop ‘The Future of Human Rights in a Sustainable and Equitable Society’ will be presented, organized by the UN Global Compact in Brazil – at the Future Mobility Hub in the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre – 10th Floor – Dubai, UAE.
On December 8, the largest event of the UN Global Compact in Brazil will be held, called ‘Transition in the Global South: Building a Net Zero Economy’, where the institution’s launches at COP28 will also be presented. The event will also take place at the Future Mobility Hub in the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre – 10th Floor – Dubai, UAE.
