UC Conservation Unit, is characterized by territorial and marine spaces that hold natural and/or cultural attributes, considered essential for the conservation and sustainable use of its resources, playing a highly significant role in maintaining biological diversity.
The UCs are legally instituted by the public power in its three spheres: municipal, state and federal.
According to the CNUC (National Register of Conservation Units), maintained by the Ministry of the Environment, in 2021, there were 2,544 conservation units in Brazil, which together cover an area of about 255.5 million hectares.
These areas are regulated by law nº 9985/2000, which establishes the Snuc (National System of Conservation Units), and are divided into two groups: those for full protection and those for sustainable use.
There are five categories of Integral Protection CUs: Esec – Ecological Station, Monat – Natural Monument, Parna – National Park, Rebio – Biological Reserve and RVS – Wildlife Refuge. See the full definition of each here: categories UCs.
In these areas, only the indirect use of their natural resources in activities such as scientific research and ecological tourism is allowed.
