The event awarded companies that promote excellence in corporate management, providing them with the opportunity to endorse their commitments to the key pillars of ESG.
Ambipar, a leading Brazilian multinational in environmental management, held the 7th Compliance ESG Brazil Award 2022 on Monday night (3), an initiative that has been certifying excellence in corporate management since 2011. The event brought together companies with the aim of rewarding those that strive for voluntary compliance with laws, have self-control and self-management criteria, and seek sustainability and integrity through compliance, linked to the pillars of ESG. The ESG Case | Highlight of the Year award went to Porto Sudeste in Itaguaí (RJ). In the other categories, the first-place winners were Cenibra, Tarkett, Coca-Cola Andina, ThyssenKrupp, and Flextronics.
“The winners of the 7th Compliance ESG Brazil Award 2022 prioritize sustainability as their purpose and are capable of transforming society as a whole, starting with their employees, positively impacting the environment, and charting new courses in the market. There is no turning back now, and organizations must be seen as integral and inseparable parts of society. The people who inhabit the world are in the companies. That’s where everything has to be considered, that’s where everything can be changed,” says Daniela Pedroza, CEO of Ambipar Green Tech.
The 7th Compliance ESG Brazil Award 2022 also provided companies with the opportunity to endorse their commitments to socio-environmental integrity guidelines. Approximately 4,000 medium and large-sized national organizations that monitor Legal Performance in the areas of Environment, Health and Safety, and Food Quality, audited by Ambipar Group from September 2021 to August 2022, participated in the event.
At the award ceremony, guests had the opportunity to see firsthand how carbon offsetting is available to those who decide to commit to ESG principles. One of the initiatives was the use of Ambify, a carbon offset platform that contributed to making the awards ceremony carbon-free. With immediate offsetting, it connects to the process of transforming towards a greener, low-carbon economy, enabling the offsetting of its own emissions.
Another technology that attracted attention at the awards ceremony was the Retorna Machine, a solution from Ambipar Triciclo, which is a digital recycling point where attendees could dispose of the water bottles consumed at the event. The tool is not exclusive to plastic disposal; it can also collect glass, aluminum, steel, and long-life packaging for recycling. Using barcode scanning, the machines read the deposited material and calculate scores for each item, which can be redeemed for benefits.
The master of ceremonies, journalist and presenter Michelle Trombelli, accompanied by a sign language interpreter, presented the 7th Compliance ESG Brazil Award 2022 and began the event by addressing the issue of diversity and talking about the importance of individuals thinking collectively. Michelle then invited Ambipar Environment CEO Cristina Andriotti to the stage to welcome the audience and emphasize the importance of prioritizing environmental preservation above all, while explaining concepts such as circular economy and post-consumption, for example, without losing focus on social issues. “Today, we have an ecosystem of solutions primarily to mitigate CO2 emissions, not just to work on carbon offsetting. That’s the future, starting with medium and large corporations,” said the Ambipar Environment CEO.
A highly anticipated guest then addressed the audience: Andrea Schwarz, CEO of iiGual (Inclusion and Diversity), who spoke on the topic “Positive impacts of a humanized management.” For over 20 years, the social entrepreneur has been running a consultancy specialized in the inclusion of people with disabilities. Since finding her voice and purpose, she has helped 20,000 professionals find their place in the formal job market. Today, her messages are seen by 260,000 followers on LinkedIn and over 120,000 followers on Instagram.
The social entrepreneur reflected on how powerful the ESG agenda is, and how its consequences generate profit for businesses. “Every story is a journey, and you don’t have to be a woman with a disability to identify with my speech: the stories intersect, they connect. Tell your story to change other stories. References are opportunities, horizons, possibilities. I share my story so that others know they can get there. I see activism as a way to put hope in motion and to give back the good we receive. And it is impossible to think about ESG without addressing people because they leave legacies in organizations that change stories,” concluded Andrea Schwarz.
The program also featured a panel on the topic “ESG as a strategy for sustainable development.” Moderated by Michelle Trombelli, the panel included executives Janice Zanardo, Health, Safety and Environment Manager at Mondelez; José Luiz Esteves da Fonseca, Executive Manager of Sustainability and Institutional Relations at MRV&CO; and Rafael Tello, Director of Sustainability at Ambipar.
Executive Janice Zanardo discussed how a company can take responsibility for the work of third parties. “As large corporations, we have tools to collaborate with the ESG agenda, including with our suppliers. In fact, there is a cutoff line to participate in bidding processes, with questions that differentiate those who already work with ESG,” explained the Mondelez manager, adding that Consumer 3.0 is demanding when it comes to formulas, which means that products are increasingly adapted to meet ESG requirements as well.
José Luiz from MRV&CO highlighted the commitments made to the so-called 2030 Agenda, a global United Nations pact composed of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to promote global sustainable growth by 2030. According to the executive, MRV&CO focuses on fulfilling each of these commitments, with periodic review of actions by the team. “We outline the strategic materiality matrix of the company and listen to our stakeholders before working on the renewal of commitments every three years, which is quite challenging. To make it more tangible, we look at each SDG when we purchase land, develop the project, and build, until we hand over the keys to our customers. Therefore, I can say that our commitment to the 2030 Agenda at MRV&CO is daily,” highlights the Executive Manager of Sustainability and Institutional Relations of the construction company.
The most anticipated moment of the evening was when Daniela Pedroza joined Ambipar | Âmbito CEO Wanderson Nascimento to announce the winners of the 7th Compliance ESG Brazil Award 2022. Porto Sudeste in Itaguaí (RJ) was chosen as the 2022 Highlight | ESG Case.
