For the first time, the company is awarded in the “Best Individual Offsetting Project” category, with a project in partnership with IPÊ, AR Corredores de Vida.

The project by IPÊ – Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas, AR Corredores de Vida, carried out in partnership with Biofílica Ambipar Environment, an Ambipar Group company, won the Environmental Finance Award. This is the fifth time that the Institute’s partner company receives the award. In this edition, the company was awarded for the first time in the “Best Individual Offsetting Project” category for the work developed in partnership with IPÊ, a Brazilian socio-environmental organization that has been working for the conservation of the Atlantic Forest since 1992. In four previous editions, Biofílica Ambipar received awards in the category “Best Project Developer, Forest and Land use”, in the years 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020. In 2022, it took second place.

The winning project is part of a new phase of the Corridors of Life Project, created and implemented by IPÊ since 2002 in Pontal do Paranapanema, in the extreme west of the state of São Paulo, in the Atlantic Forest biome. The Institute’s work is an initiative supported by three pillars: Climate, Community and Biodiversity, with national and international recognition. This forest restoration work has as its starting point the Map of Dreams of Pontal do Paranapanema, created through IPÊ surveys, which defined the priority areas for reforestation in Western São Paulo initially in seven municipalities.

“It is with great joy that we once again received the Environmental Finance Award. We won four other awards and, this time, we won one of our important projects, “AR Corredores de Vida”. This case, in addition to the climate and biodiversity component, promotes several benefits to the community, mainly through environmental education activities, promotion of courses and incentives for the implementation of forest seedling nurseries, which makes us very proud of the work carried out together with our partners”, celebrates Plínio Ribeiro, CEO of Biofílica Ambipar.

“We were very happy with the award dedicated to the project. The partnership with Biofílica Ambipar is very relevant for us to scale our carbon mitigation actions and generate socio-environmental impact in Pontal do Paranapanema. This year alone, forest restoration secured 250 jobs in the region. Many people find in this activity a chance to generate income for their families – from those who work in the IPÊ nurseries to the companies that carry out the planting accompanied by our technical team. An award is always a great recognition, but also a great responsibility to do more and better for the biodiversity of the Atlantic and Brazilian Forest, which is the mission of IPÊ”, says Dr. Laury Cullen Jr, coordinator of the Corridors of Life project at the Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (IPÊ).

The partnership with Biofílica Ambipar from 2021

In 2021, IPÊ expanded reforestation actions through a partnership with Biofílica Ambipar Environment, jointly creating the AR Corredores de Vida Project and directing efforts to generate carbon credits to be certified by the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate , Community and Biodiversity (CCB) – from the Verra standard. From the forest restoration of the Atlantic Forest in the Pontal do Paranapanema region – by planting seedlings, enrichment or conducting regeneration – the project contributes to the conversion of 75,000 hectares of areas of environmental liabilities of private properties into restored areas with about 150 million new tree seedlings.

With the addition of the carbon component, the priority areas of the Mapa dos Sonhos were expanded from 7 to 30 municipalities. The AR Corredores de Vida Project has already restored 500 hectares since December 2021, which is equivalent to approximately 1 million tree seedlings in the Atlantic Forest, and will implement another 1,250 hectares by the end of 2023, totaling 1,750 in two years of operation. The expectation is to attract companies interested in buying removal carbon credits.

doctor Laury Cullen points out: “The forest restoration work carried out by IPÊ together with partners is based on the CCB – Climate, Community and Biodiversity. I emphasize that in the Climate sphere, forests remove carbon, which contributes to mitigating the effects of climate change. With regard to the Community, the creation of jobs for the local population with an increase in income is remarkable. As for Biodiversity, forest restoration and landscape management contribute to the conservation of flora and fauna, and thus to all the diversity of life”. The black lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysopygus), an endangered species and the focus of the IPÊ project, is also among the species benefiting from restoration actions.
