The risks of transmission of the new coronavirus by means of objects and surfaces, such as floors, tables and doorknobs, have led to an increase in demand for environmental decontamination services. Brazilian companies in the sector report demand for industries, hotels and airlines, among others.
One of the companies in the sector is the Brazilian startup Aurratech, which drew attention in mid-March to be chosen to disinfect the Hotel H10 Costa Adeje Palace in Tenerife, Spain. More than a thousand people were quarantined in the hotel after being identified the first case of the country’s coronavirus.
"After everyone left the hotel, it would be closed, but it needed to be decontaminated. Nobody wanted to decontaminate, but we got in touch with the hotel service company and showed that we knew how to biodecontaminate," said Caio Vinícius Agmont, a partner at Aurratech.
To do the decontamination, the company used its own technology called "Fog in place," which basically transforms cleaning chemicals into a kind of dry mist. When condensing, the product covers 100% of the surface of the site. The service is done by machines, the man does not perform disinfection.
This technology was initially used to cater to an orange juice manufacturer. Large tanks that required 4 million liters of water to be disinfected began to be decontaminated with only 40 liters of water.
"We then started to serve large refrigerators and we were diversifying", he said.
According to Agmont, the expectation is to grow 60% a 70% revenue this year, compared to US $ 1 million registered last year. New machines are being ordered. Recently, the company signed a partnership with 99 Taxi to carry out the decontamination of vehicles in São Paulo, Rio and Belo Horizonte.
The largest company in this market is Ambipar, based in Nova Odessa (SP), with 150 operations in 15 countries, in addition to 3 thousand employees. In February, the company was driven by the UK government to carry out the decontamination of two aircraft used after rescuing British in the Chinese city of Wuhan, epicenter of covid-19 in China.
"It’s not something new for us. We have already worked with H1N1, with cases of Ebola in Africa, with Sars," says Dennys Spencer, operational director of Ambipar. "The difference for a common cleaning company is the way cleaning planning, staff training, equipment used."
Ambipar charges per square meter decontaminated. According to Spencer, there was a 500% increase in demand for film, but it does not open values or total area. Customers are commercial buildings, office slabs, private schools, gymnastics academies, area companies in several countries.
"We are anticipating that there will be an increase in demand still ahead, since the contagion curves still seem not to be declining. So, we have mapped geographically the demands that arise to hire staff in more strategic locations," Spencer said.
In Porto Alegre, the company Skydrones is performing decontamination tests of public areas using Pelican 2020 drones, generally used for spraying in the area of agriculture. According to the president of Skydrones, Ulf Bogdawa, the procedure has already been adopted in other countries, especially in China.
"Our suppliers in China put us in touch with the health authorities in China and we got the protocol for disinfecting with drones. Prefectures have shown interest in this to decontaminate public areas," the president of the company explained.
He recalled that in early 2016, the same model was used against the Aedes aegypti mosquito and won the nickname "Zika Killer". "The model has a removable tank of 10 liters to apply the disinfectant product and has the ability to apply daily an average of 25 hectares (250,000 square meters) automatically", said.
